An F/A-18 military jet has crashed into homes near the Miramar Marine Corp. Air Station, authorities said.
Marine officials say the two pilots aboard the jet bailed out and are alive. Neighbors said they heard sputtering, saw the jet wobbling and then it crashed, creating a ball of fire. Afterwards, neighbors said they saw the pilot wandering around in a daze. There were no reports yet of any injuries on the ground.
There were no immediate words about injuries, but the San Diego police officials said the pilot ejected from the plane beforehand. The crash occurred just before noon.
Monica Munoz of the San Diego Police Department told MSNBC that authorities know of no fatalities at this time.
TV footage shows smoke coming from homes in the University Hills section of San Diego about two miles from the air station. One home appears to have been destroyed, with several others suffering moderate damage.
